Visa and Residence Permit  

 

 
 

Visas and residence permit are important documents for the legal residence of international students in China. They determine whether a student can study at ease during their time at the school, as well as easily finish their studies. Visa and residence permit are, however, relatively complex matters, and different situations require different complicated procedures to handle them. Students should therefore read and understand the following material in detail, and may consult the International Students’ Services Office of Institute for International Students on any aspect which remains unclear. This ensures that for the time of your study, your visa and residence permit will not become a problem.

 



Who needs to do it?

Students who are under an X1 visa and will stay at Nanjing for more than half a year need to apply for a residence permit which allows you to have the multiple entry. These students must go to Nanjing Public Security Bureau to apply for a residence permit within 30 days, after entering China.

1Physical Examination Report

Please follow the Public WeChat Account “江苏国际旅行卫生保健中心”, click the “业务预约” in the lower left to make an appointment for a physical examination. The medical examination report is valid for six months.

 

If you did examination in your home country already, please go the Jiangsu International Travel Health Care Center for the verification.

 

2Temporary Accommodation Registration Form

Students living in dorm can get the form from the front desk. Students live off campus can apply to the local police station where you live. You can also follow 南京公安 on WeChat and choose 微服务 出入境 境外人员临时住宿登记 in turn.

 

 

3Insurance

Visa application requires the purchase of insurance stipulated by the Ministry of Education. Please ensure that you have properly purchased the insurance for your study time.

 

(4) Residence Permit Application Form

Once you paid the insurance and get the first and second documents above, you can go to Mr. YU at Room 518, Zengxianzi Building, Nanjing University Gulou Campus to get the residence permit application form. After that, you can go certain police office to apply for residence permit.

 



  

What if I don't do it?  
If students holding X1 visa and don't apply for residence permit within 30 days after arriving China, they will become illegal residents and will have to pay an amount of penalties to the local immigration bureau. 
 

 
 
Leaving the Country after Finishing Studies   
When leaving mainland China after finishing their studies, international students must leave before the expiration of their visa or residence permit. If due to accident a student is unable to leave within the stipulated time, they must submit an application, and after approval must extend their visa or residence permit. 
 
Students who want to suspend their schooling must go to the Institute’s International Students’ Service Office to reduce their residence permit.  
 
Respecting Chinese Law and Associated Regulations   
The legal rights of international students studying in China receive protection under Chinese law. Students must also respect the laws of China and the regulations of their school.
